Mini Sessions vs. Regular Sessions: Which Is Right for You?
If you’re thinking about booking a mini session but aren't sure if it’s the right choice, I totally get it. I’ve been offering mini sessions in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2015, and over the years, I’ve seen just how much they’ve become a go-to for many of my clients.
They’re quick, convenient, and a great way to get some beautiful photos. However, just because many are choosing this option, they aren’t always the perfect fit for everyone.
Mini sessions are perfect for many, but if you're looking for something more personalized, with more time and flexibility, a full portrait session might be a better choice. Let’s go over what mini sessions are all about, so you can make the best decision for you and your family.
What Are Mini Sessions?
Mini sessions are short, sweet photo shoots that I typically offer in the spring or fall. Think of them as a condensed version of a full session: with high-quality, beautiful photos, but without the time commitment and flexibility of a regular session. Whether you need updated family photos, maternity shots, or just a fresh set of images for your holiday cards, mini sessions are designed to give you just the right amount of photos in a short amount of time. The best part? Dates, locations, and times are all pre-set, so there’s no stress on your part. You just book your spot from what’s made available, show up, and I’ll do the rest.
Now, allow me to break down the pros and cons to help you decide.
Why Mini Sessions Might Be Perfect for You:
Cost-effective: Mini sessions are the perfect option for those who want great photos without the investment of a full session.
Quick and easy: If your schedule is packed or you simply don’t have the mental capacity for a regular 45 minute session, a mini is ideal. You’ll get gorgeous photos in just 20 minutes. Quick, simple, and almost stress-free.
Minimal commitment: Ideal for those who want just a few images without the need for an extensive session filled with numerous group shots and a bunch of candid images.
Easy booking process: Mini sessions are streamlined and simple. All the planning has already been completed. The only thing you need to do is go online, pick a location, choose a date, pay and you’re set. No back-and-forth emails, no complicated planning. Just easy, (almost) stress-free booking.
Why Mini Sessions Might Not Be Right for You:
Not ideal for all children: If you’ve got little ones who need extra time to warm up or if your kids are on the high active side, 20 minutes might not be enough to get the best shots. Now, if you’re ok with letting go of perfection and ok with whatever is captured during the short time, a mini session can work.
Limited location options: Mini sessions are held at pre-selected locations. Meaning, you won’t have the flexibility to choose a location outside of what’s being offered.
Restricted scheduling & time flexibility: Since mini sessions are held on set dates, rescheduling may not be possible. If you're late or need extra time, minis leave little to no room for special accommodations. Prefer to take your time by not feeling rushed or restricted? Opt for a regular portrait session.
Less room for customization: Again, mini sessions are quick, so there’s limited time for things like outfit changes, poses, or a variety of candid shots. If you’re looking for candids and poses, a full session will allow for more creativity.
So, Which Session is Right for You?
If you’re still debating between a mini and a regular portrait session, I’ll say this with full transparency: be realistic about your expectations, and your family dynamic. Consider your own mental capacity (and patience) between a 20-minute short session and a 45-minute family portrait session.
All in all, mini sessions are perfect if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get some good photos. They’re great for families, couples, or anyone who needs a quick photo update. But if you’re looking for a more personalized experience, with more flexibility, or more time to create, a full portrait session might be the better choice.
